Malcolm gladwell hard decisions9/6/2023 But when the US Navy and Marines captured the Mariana Islands in the summer of 1944, the Japanese home islands at last lay within range of the new B-29. They succeeded only in putting one Japanese aircraft factory out of business. Later raids launched from distant Indian and then Chinese airfields cost 125 B-29s and more than a thousand US airmen. It did little damage but boosted American morale and raised doubts among many in Japan about the wisdom of challenging the United States. The Doolittle Raid (April 18, 1942) on Tokyo was a public relations stunt. Until the final months of 1944, Japan lay largely out of reach. Bombing the “choke points” of Japan’s military production It was the ultimate expression of strategic bombing in WWII to a greater extent than the far better known firebombing of Dresden and other German cities. All told, area bombing of Japan’s cities killed several hundred thousand people, far more than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And LeMay proceeded to mount such attacks again and again over Tokyo and almost every other Japanese city.īy the time LeMay sent the Enola Gay over Hiroshima on August 6, he had run out of suitable targets. More than 90,000 and possibly over 100,000 Japanese people were killed, mostly civilians, and one million were left homeless. Bombs dropped from 279 Boeing B-29 Superfortress heavy bombers burned out much of eastern Tokyo. On the night of March 9-10, 1945, he launched Operation Meetinghouse, the single most destructive bombing raid in history. But it took the general little more than a month to jettison dependence on the Norden bombsight and turn instead to the indiscriminate bombing of Tokyo. Gladwell describes LeMay’s early, largely unsuccessful efforts to improve on Hansell’s results. Tokyo after the March 9-10 1945 firebombing mission described in The Bomber Mafia as “the longest night of the Second World War.” Image: US Army via The Japan Times The single most destructive bombing raid in history The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War by Malcolm Gladwell (2021) 179 pages ★★★★☆ A military historian later dubbed LeMay “the Air Force’s ultimate problem solver.” If anyone could devise a more successful approach, they thought, it was LeMay. They sacked the man in charge in the Pacific, Gen. In January 1945, the Army Air Force brass concluded that the Norden-based strategy had failed in Japan. Unfortunately, the temperamental device proved far less successful under combat conditions. In tests, Carl Norden‘s invention seemed miraculous, encouraging the leadership of the Army and Navy to believe their planes could “ drop a bomb into a pickle barrel from 30,000 feet.” Their hopes rested on a brilliant innovation called the Norden bombsight. They staffed the Air Corps Tactical School near Montgomery Alabama at what was then called Maxwell Field. Precision bombing was the dream of the dozen or so young maverick airmen dubbed the Bomber Mafia who trained US Air Force pilots in the 1930s. LeMay emerged the winner at the time, and he comes across as the author’s hero. Gladwell terms it “a case study in dreams gone awry.” In his telling, the debate was personified by the divergent careers of two US Army Air Force generals, Haywood Hansell and Curtis LeMay. The book, subtitled “ A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War,” dramatizes the debate at the heart of the growing use of airpower in the war-the dispute between the two schools of thought about strategic bombing in WWII: high-altitude precision targeting and unrestrained area bombing of cities. In The Bomber Mafia, Malcolm Gladwell departs from the precincts of social psychology he knows so well ( The Tipping Point, Talking to Strangers, Outliers) and ventures into the history of World War II.

Alpha sigma tau pin9/6/2023 Benjamin Piatt Runkle circa 1857, then an undergraduate student at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. He died on Sigma Chi's 61st birthday in Ohio. He was the only founder to serve as Grand Consul. After the army he was ordained an Episcopal priest. Runkle stayed in the army as a career and retired as a major general. He was badly wounded at the Battle of Shiloh and left for dead on the battlefield. When the Civil War began Runkle joined the Union Army. Runkle was known for having a fierce pride and was suspended from Miami University when he fought a member of Beta Theta Pi for sneering at his badge. Runkle helped design the badge of Sigma Chi based on the story of Constantine and the vision of the Cross. Benjamin Piatt Runkle (Septem– June 28, 1916) was born in West Liberty, Ohio. The White Cross and the motto " In Hoc Signo Vinces" are examples of the Constantine link. Much of Sigma Chi's heraldry was inspired by the legendary story of the Emperor Constantine from the Battle of Milvian Bridge against Maxentius. It is possible this action could have been forced upon the group as there was already a Sigma Phi Society. The eventual theft of Sigma Phi's constitution, rituals, seals, and other records from Lockwood's room in Oxford in January 1856 prompted them to change the name of the fraternity to Sigma Chi. Lockwood used his business training to help organize the fraternity in its early years. On June 28, 1855, the organization was founded under the name Sigma Phi Fraternity. The six men decided to form their own fraternity along with William Lewis Lockwood, a student from New York who had not joined a fraternity. Runkle resigned, and after the parent chapter at Yale University was contacted, all six men were formally expelled. The other four would be allowed to stay in the fraternity. The leaders of the rebellion, Runkle and Scobey, were to be expelled from the fraternity. Reid had told Millikin his side of the dispute and they had arrived to punish the group for not supporting their Delta Kappa Epsilon brother. Reid brought a Delta Kappa Epsilon alumnus named Minor Millikin from a nearby town. Whitelaw Reid, one of the other brothers who supported the Delta Kappa Epsilon member as poet, was the only one to arrive. In February 1855 Runkle and his companions planned a dinner for their brothers in an attempt to seal the rift. Both sides saw this as a matter of principle and over the next few months their friendships became distanced. The chapter had twelve members total and were evenly divided on the issue. Although Thomas Bell and Daniel Cooper were not members of Erodelphian they had aligned themselves with the four dissenting members. He was supported by five of his brothers, but four others, James Caldwell, Isaac Jordan, Benjamin Runkle, and Franklin Scobey, supported another man who was not a member of the fraternity. In the fall of 1854 the literary society was to elect its poet and a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon was nominated for the position. Several members of Miami University's Delta Kappa Epsilon chapter (of which all but one of Sigma Chi's founders were members) were also members of the Erodelphian Literary Society. Jordan, Daniel William Cooper, Franklin Howard Scobey, and James Parks Caldwell as the result of a disagreement over who would be elected Poet in the Erodelphian Literary Society of Miami University in Ohio. Sigma Chi was founded in 1855 by Benjamin Piatt Runkle, Thomas Cowan Bell, William Lewis Lockwood, Isaac M. According to the fraternity's constitution, "the purpose of this fraternity shall be to cultivate and maintain the high ideals of friendship, justice, and learning upon which Sigma Chi was founded." Like all fraternities, Sigma Chi has its own colors, insignia, and rituals. Sigma Chi is divided into seven operational entities: the Sigma Chi Fraternity, the Sigma Chi Foundation, the Sigma Chi Canadian Foundation, the Risk Management Foundation, Constantine Capital Inc., the Blue and Gold Travel Services, and the newly organised Sigma Chi Leadership Institute. The fraternity was founded on June 28, 1855, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, by members who split from the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. The fraternity has 244 active undergraduate chapters and 152 alumni chapters across the United States and Canada and has initiated over 350,000 members. Sigma Chi ( ΣΧ) International Fraternity is one of the largest North American fraternal literary societies. As a result of that bug CC doesn't ask that one question the first time I run CC.With the advent of technology and the internet, enjoying easy and accessible media is no longer a difficult task. i continue to think that the embedded code for RP in CC (I assume there is such code) contains a bug. This picture also shows that there is only a slight difference between the 2 cleaning scripts in CC for RP. When I close RP (then the process "Realplay.exe" disappears) then CC doesn't complain about closing RP. When I close and restart CC, then CC will ask that one question when I let CC analyze my laptop for the 1st time. " doesn't show up the 1st time I run CC after starting my laptop. As mentioned before: This one question "RP 20 needs to be closed. That also could be the reason why this odd behaviour shows up. With the latest version of CC installed I also have a CC icon in the system tray. So, I would assume that the "RP 20" cleaning code is included in the standard program code of CC. The 1st RP line ("RP 20") hasn't got an asterix. Just look, after installation, for a program called "setup.exe". I still have the last 5 or 6 original RP installation files (I know how to find those original RP installation files. I must confess that I didn't like the GUI of the 2 latest versions of RP and went back to the version before that. Some more / final ? thoughts regarding this problem: So, that suggests that the "build-in" "RP 20" script does contain some code that makes CC ask that one question. As said before the amount and size of the "RP" files to be deleted is about the same as the amount & size of the "RP 20" files. That entry simply always seem to clean the RP related files. But the "RP" entry does never ask that one question. When I want to do this for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th time then CC will show that message !!!! This is for the "RP 20" entry. As said before, when I do this for the 1st time (after re-starting my laptop) then CC won't show that message. Tried a few times more to clean "RP 20" related files. (I always keep a copy of the last say 5 versions of RP). Different registry entries and/or files ? If you're interested I still have the original installation files of both RP versions. I assume that the new installation differs (slightly) from the older version. I installed 1st the older version and then when a new version of RP was released I installed the newer version. Real Player and Real Player 20/20 are seperate apps and so it is possible to have both installed, do you have both installed? Presumably 'old' Real Player wasn't running so it got cleaned - or if you don't still have the older RP installed then it could be a glitch in the modified winapp2. So at some time in the past you have told CCleaner not to ask again about closing if Real Player 20/20 is running, so it's just been skipped. It will just show 'skipped' in the results like it does there in your screenshot.Īnd it's easy to forget that at sometime in the past you have ticked 'Do not show me this message again' for a particular item. If you have previously ticked 'Do not show me this message again' for a 'skip' popup then in future Custom Clean will simply skip it when necessary without showing you the popup again. Leveling jacks scaffolding9/6/2023 I found that during the process of leveling my scaffold with outriggers, some of them became very tight in the square tubes, and were difficult to adjust. They fit the square tubes in my Home Depot Pro series scaffold, as well as my older Harbor Freight scaffold, but there isn't a lot of clearance. Some people have complained they didn't fit their scaffolding, which may be because they're slightly bent. The manufacturer could have easily straightened them in a press, as I'm going to have to do, but they sent them out with a bend in them. My complaint is the threads are rolled, and during that process, some of them were bowed slightly. Solid ones would be much heavier and much more expensive. I don't know why some people are complaining about them being hollow, they're plenty strong enough for their intended use. I gave these 4 stars instead of 5 because they really needed the handles reversed and stops removed to fit well and give good support to the yellow indoor MetalTech scaffolding. I attached outriggers with leveling jacks already in them. Another way was to put a single stack tower on its side, insert and secure the leveling jacks with bungee cords and stand the tower back up. I lifted one end of a tower without the floor in it and inserted both leveling jacks and lowered the tower end onto the leveling jacks to get them in the tower legs. I was grateful these were the hollow leg leveling jacks! It saves a few minutes if you don't mind walking maybe 90 pounds. If I wanted to move a single story tower I could remove the safety rail and floor and secure the leveling jacks with bungee cords and lift the entire tower from the center and walk it to a new location. It's 30 minutes to move the tower, but that's better than tipping over a two story tower. The scaffolding sets up to two towers in 20 minutes and breaks down in 10 minutes, including safety rails, single handed. If you need leveling jacks with stacked scaffolding, you should not be rolling or even tempting yourself to roll scaffolding around that kind of ground. I would also not use the leveling jacks that allow wheels under them if you are ever stacking scaffolding above 6 feet. There are just too many places not level around the outside walls of a house to not be using leveling jacks with scaffolding! I would not buy shorter leveling jacks because it was too easy to find myself using all of the safe height of the 24 inch leveling jacks. To manage this, I pinned the top outrigger hole at the first available hole of the scaffolding, and used a clamp to secure the bottom of the outrigger near its lower hole. I painted a bright orange band just below the removed stops to remind myself not to support the scaffolding higher than the removed stops.īecause the leveling jacks are 24 inches tall, you cannot pin both holes of the outriggers to the scaffolding. The stops also kept the leveling jacks from fitting easily inside the scaffolding legs, so I gained two benefits doing this. To make them work better, I spent an hour grinding off the stops and filing the same threads so I could remove and reverse the leveling handles to give better support to the scaffolding legs. I relied on these to keep my two story scaffolding tower level, even on the back concrete porch which was not exactly level. Jack heads are always working in conjunction with Jack base to adjust scaffolding sets in a easy way.I bought these to use with the MetalTech yellow Baker style Safeclimb scaffolding so I could use the scaffolding outdoors around the house without buying additional outdoor scaffolding. It can fit all types of scaffolding systems, such as frames, ringlock, or cuplock systems. Casting iron nut is used on the screw stem, high-strength and galvanized for durability. The screw jack with base plate allows your scaffold set to be leveled on uneven surfaces. Due to the big supporing area, slope of up to 6 % can be achieved by the head plate.īase plate is welded to the tubular screw stem, with a hole in each corner for securing to mudsill. Made from high strength steel pipes, screw jacks are equipped with 150 x 150 mm head plate to support and stabilize horizontal timber beam or steel beams in slab construction. This leads me to install Kubuntu as dual boot on another partition of my laptop. I wanted to make it visible to the other members of the team but the only way to do so was through the Shiny server which only work on Linux OSs. I can preview the functionalities I added to the application through my web browser when I run the application. I remember a web application I was developping using the R Shiny framework. In this stage, you should install Rstudio-server to subsystem side and you can install R environment to linux side as well. Most of the softwares including R, Python, Stata, SAS, Gretl all work really fine on Windows and so no need to look elsewhere.īut as I started to do web developement I’ve come to have little hard times with Windows. I am really happy with that operating system for my college courses. When I bought my computer, like the majority of the PCs yo would buy today, it was shipped with the latest Windows 10 OS. In reality today the majority of web and cloud servers are running Linux and that is not because Linux is free but because at its core Linux was designed to help computers communicate. One of the major advantages I’ve found so far using Linux over Windows is about networking and the ability to easily connect and using your computer resources remotely. I am not saying that Windows is bad but I just very comfortable using bash and easy is it to install any package just through a few command line with apt for Debian based Linux distributions. Linux may be intimidating when you start using it but when you understand how it works, your computer will no more have secrets for you.ĭevelopping in Linux offered me the best ever experience I’ve had so far. I really love the power of open source softwares. Not so long ago I’ve started using intensively Linux. Victor vran transmutation recipes9/6/2023 Developed and published by Haemimont Games AD. Father simon baker9/6/2023 Then, in 2001, he won the lead role in a procedural crime series with CBS, as troubled lawyer Nick Fallin in The Guardian. Various well-received small parts – most notably in LA Confidential, as a doomed gay actor – followed, without leading to major film success. It's incredibly important to me."īaker during a photo shoot in Paris in February this year. I still go back there now – to that place, those people. I was pretty close to my mum, but my environment at the beach, which was a male environment, was really my community. My stepfather raised me, but we didn't get on that well, and I pulled away. I grew up kind of – not literally, but sort of – fatherless. It's sort of, well, okay, put your head down, try not to smile."Īs he points out now, grinning, "There's a lot more self-congratulation these days! But yeah, that was my model, I guess. "You watch a football game and someone scores a try under the post and you don't see too much self-congratulatory behaviour. "Growing up in Australia, I saw so many of those guys," he once said. The model of masculinity he learnt there sounds like the classic Australian archetype: strong, emotionally undemonstrative, and extremely, almost obsessively, self-deprecating. "But the beach gave me a place to go to figure out who I was." (Baker himself still surfs regularly.) "It feels like such a cliché," he says apologetically. His escape from these family complexities was the beach, where he was part of a close-knit circle of surfing mates. A second marriage (from which the name Denny came: Baker began acting as Simon Denny, then Simon Denny Baker) also ended, and Baker was out of contact with his biological father until adulthood. His parents' marriage ended when he was still a toddler and much of his childhood and teenage years were spent in Lennox Head, near Byron Bay. Along with his older sister (now a Melbourne GP) the family relocated to New Guinea when Baker was nine months old. Baker was born in Launceston, Tasmania his mother was a high school English teacher, his father a mechanic. It must have been odd growing up looking like this as a working-class boy on the NSW north coast. Simon Baker and wife Rebecca Rigg with daughter Stella and sons Harry, at left, and Claude, in Hollywood in 2013. On any other person this outfit would look totally unremarkable on him, he might be disappointed to hear, it looks like couture. Today he's wearing jeans, a casual shirt and chunky boots. Not that he seems to do much to cultivate such elegance perhaps, indeed, the reverse. You can see exactly why luxury brands such as Givenchy and Longines – not to mention ANZ – have hitched their wagons to his star. He also possesses that trait rare among men – and women, for that matter – of great natural elegance. In person, despite shaggy hair (which he once claimed to cut himself, "by feel") and a scruffy ginger beard, he has one of those slow smiles, involving laugh lines and white teeth, that really does light up a room. This may have something to do with the way he looks. But in Australia, as he himself says, he's always been a low-key, middle-of-the-firmament kind of star.Īnd yet, most people – certainly most women – know exactly who he is. So he's been big in the US, certainly, and even bigger in Europe, where The Mentalist is huge. For most of the past decade and a half, he's played two quiet, conflicted men, in two American TV crime series – The Mentalist, and before that, The Guardian. He's never starred in a huge box office hit he's done no edgy HBO series no major theatre. Credit: Nicolas Guerin/Contour by Gettyīaker is 45. And it's a bit hard to go, 'Actually, I've done 20-something films, I'm brilliant.' " Well, that's true. "Most people just identify me with The Mentalist, that show that's on Channel Nine sometimes. "But I'm not that big a star," he objects. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, I try to point out. I never felt brash enough to bring it up: 'Oh yeah, I'll star in it, and produce it, and direct it.' " Yet here he is, doing all those things. this is why I never wanted to even suggest it. "God," he says, "how cheesy does that sound? I knew it would sound vain. He will also star in the film and co-produce it. Most of what he's worried about today is his first film as director – an adaptation of Tim Winton's lyrical, disturbing novel Breath. And though it's hard to imagine from someone who looks like the literal embodiment of every laid-back, blue-eyed surfer dream we've ever had, it seems as if this might not be an unusual state for him. He's sitting in a brightly lit restaurant on a sunny afternoon, hands on his knees, worrying about it – which makes a nice change in a celebrity. Simon Baker doesn't want to sound like an idiot.
